Fort Bragg is located near Fayetteville, North Carolina. Fort Bragg History

Camp Bragg was established on September 4, 1918, as an artillery training ground. It was named after Confederate Army General Braxton Bragg. The camp was established when the Army needed to expand its field artillery training facilities in preparation for World War I. The location was chosen because it met the major criteria, which was a climate suitable for year round training and close proximity to a port and rail transportation. Camp Bragg was renamed Fort Bragg when it became a permanent Army post in 1922.

In 1934 Fort Bragg launched its first military parachute jump. Just two decades later, the post became an airborne training site. By 1940, Fort Bragg had reached a total of 5,400 soldiers. With World War II beginning and the Selective Service Act, a reception station was built on Fort Bragg and the population increased to 67,000 within a year. The first airborne units were trained in Fort Bragg in 1942. In 1951, XVIII Airborne Corps was reactivated in Fort Bragg, and the post became widely known as the “home of the airborne.”
