Southern Pines History
The earliest settlers to the Southern Pines area were the Highland Scots. Few crops were produced in the area due to sandy soil. The coming of the railroad resulted in the first export of harvested pine trees. John T. Patrick was the town’s founder. He bought the first 675 acres of land for the town in 1884. The community was originally called Vineland, but it soon changed to Southern Pines. Patrick viewed climate in the area as the biggest asset to the community, which was originally conceived as a health resort. Southern Pines merged with the East Southern Pines community in 1931 and has continued growing ever since.
